Gentle Knitter: Remembrance and the wonderful story we just heard about Nameless Morris bring to mind several things. But first you need to know about Nameless Morris. It seems that Nameless was injured while on his morning stroll. One of our Knitters rescued him and took him to Dr. Orr who has a reputation of healing God’s creatures both great and small. Dr. Orr met the challenge and through his skill and the generosity of our Knitter, Nameless was returned to health and able to join his new family. He lived out his years in complete comfort at the Morris Homestead. Remembrances like this are a gift in this life from God.
Elyse is celebrating her fifth anniversary of opening Only Ewe and Cotton Too. Throughout these years of learning and growning, we have enjoyed so much the stories and life experiences that have been shared by you, our Gentle Knitters. Just as with the story about Nameless Morris, you have shared the joy of remembrances from your lives. Perhaps these thoughts are best captured in a poem which is quoted for you:
“Remembrance is the sweetest flower,
Of all this world’s perfuming,
Memory guards it sun or shower,
And Friendship keeps it blooming”.
Thank you for sharing your friendship and many kindnesses with us over these past five years and we look forward to the continued blossoming of our Flowers of Remembrance with you, our Gentle Knitters.

Gentle Knitter: Springtime in Crabapple brings so much in the way of color, light and warmth. Of course it also is a time of heavy yellow pollen from all the oaks, maples and pines. For those allergic to pollen, it is a time of Kleenex and allergy pills. This brings to mind the radio comedy of Bob and Ray from many years ago. In fact they had a song entitled “If I had a nose full of nickels, I would sneeze all over you“–certainly not to be confused with Only Ewe.
There was nothing to sneeze at with the wonderful reception we got the other night at the Atlanta Knitting Guild meeting with the introduction of some very special Skacel Lace Yarn. Elyse is working on plans for a Lace Knitting Group to start up after Stitches. Just think in terms of comfortable, yet light and airy shawls for the cool evenings of Spring.
Stitches will be here in less than two weeks and we are assembling kits that will knock your socks off–that is if they were socks. Instead these patterns, by local designers, combined with their chosen Knit Witch Yarns and Farmhouse Yarns are the kinds of special garments, hats and shells that will please you and be especially appreciated as gifts. Do plan to come see us at Booth #437 for these kits as well as some new Universal Yarns and Kollage Yarns which we are introducing at the Show. We’ll also have a fine selection of Nostepinnes made right here in Crabapple.

Gentle Knitter: Spring has finally come to Crabapple after what had seemed to be a Winter lasting six months. Elyse and I are thrilled to report that once again we have a nesting pair of Bluebirds. Crazy as it sounds, yesterday I bought 1000 meal worms at the Bird Store to feed these special visitors. Where to keep a thousand worms to be doled out over the next couple of weeks will remain an untold TALE.
We also received a new shipment of Farm House Yarns, which we call our “Everything Yarn”, and the best way to descirbe the new Winnifred’s Washable Yarns, in both semi-solids and variegated, is to have you consider the myriad colors of Spring captured in skeins of yarn. There are so many special baby, children and adult garments to be made with this machine wash and dry yarn. Come in and browse through the Cottage Creations and our own Brian’s designed Grannycore patterns to pick out projects to either knit or crochet. Springtime is indeed the time to celebrate with colorful shells and light weight elegant shawls to be made with these yarns.
The Blue Birds of Happiness and Farm House Yarns, what a grand way to welcome Spring!

Gentle Knitter: I was raised in Richmond, the home of the White House of the Confederacy, and where to this day that unfortunate disagreement of 1861-1865 is still referred to as “The Recent Unpleasantries”; and as some of you know, Elyse’s and my families hail from Scotland where saving money is an art form.
I was reminded of these histories by the receipt of a shipment of Marble Chunky Yarn. These balls of yarn are about the size of a good Confederate cannon ball and with a length of 341 yards, which combined with the rich solid colors of the companion Northern Chunky Yarn with a length of 170 yards would provide for you, Gentle Knitter, plenty of yarn to knit something for yourself and still have yarn to make gifts for kith and kin. The best part is that at $13 per ball and $5 per skein, respectively, you won’t have to bring a wheelbarrow load of Confederate money to make your purchase.
Our very talented Brian has some comments and pictures that follow. While we will be closed on Easter Sunday, we do look forward to seeing you soon at Only Ewe and Cotton Too where friends meet to sit and knit and enjoy each others’ company.

This is hard yarn to keep in stock! You’ve bought us out twice…and here it is again!
Marble Chunky is a beautiful chunky 100% washable/dryable acrylic that doesn’t feel like your typical acrylic. With its beautiful, shaded coloring, you can get the effect you are used to getting from yarns like Noro, only not so warm and heavy. Perfect for babies and children, this is a yarn you won’t have to worry about washing again and again. And the pricing can’t be beat - 341 yards of chunky yarn for only $13.00!
In addition to the Marble, we’ve got a new one one - Northern Chunky. This yarn is the same as the Marble in blend, spin, and size, only in nice solid colors. We were savvy enough to get all the colors that match perfectly with our Marble colors - so really, your possibilities are endless! Come by and take a look! To tease you, here’s a shawl Polly did for us…

Gentle Knitter: Well Elyse reports that her Mother did well at the Bridge Game yesterday. Truth be known, she is probably an unconfessed card shark, but don’t tell her I said that.
Last week we heard the good news that Leslie’s daughter was accepted at UGA. These delayed acceptances are enough to drive a parent crazy. Special occasions like this deserve a song:
“I’m proud of you, I’m proud of you,
I hope that you are proud of you TOOOO!”
We happened to have some customers, one being a nurse, in the Shop at the time Elyse and I sang to Leslie. They weren’t quite sure whether to call the the rescue squad or start CPR. Once we told them the reason for the celebration, they wanted to join in an Encore (no connection to the Plymouth Yarn by that name).

But speaking of Plymouth Yarn, we just received a new one called Jungle Yarn. This is a gorgeous ribbon with lots of colors which will add a special touch of flash to that scarf or shawl you are working on; and in a pinch, you can even wrap a present with it. It’s pretty enough to make your Mama cry with joy.

Gentle Knitter: Life is good. Today Elyse is going to Florida to spend a few days helping her Mother. You know the routine, all the important stuff-doctors, bridge club and that most crucial of all visits to the HAIR DRESSER-keep in mind I don’t frequent that place being somewhat hair challenged.
Now while I will be glad to be “in charge” for a few days, I have to request that you go easy on me with questions of color. When Elyse and I met back in 1984, I complimented her on her green dress. Turns out it was brown and at first she thought I was strange, but then I confessed to being color ignorant-so much worse than being merely color blind, because you try to guess and rarely get away with it.

Speaking of color, another new arrival here at Only Ewe is Athena Yarn. Thank goodness for color numbers because for me to rhapsodize about these wonderful hues and tones (among them gold, blue, green, red and brown) would be a travesty, so you’ll have to come see them. In the meantime, Susan was the first purchaser and we are all eagerly waiting to see what she makes.

Our awesome crochet teacher has been planning some great weekend project classes for everyone! Look at this pretty thing she’s surprised us with…..check our calendar for dates, she’d love to help you make it!

So far, this winter has been a chilly, snowy one! People have come up with lots of ways to make it a little better and a little warmer. Lots of knits to keep you cozy and snuggled have appeared in the last few weeks…and they’ve all been great!
Here’s one that’s been especially popular. These are “Bella’s Mitts.” The pattern can be found on ravelry, and the yarn can be found at Only Ewe. Here they are knitted in a lovely Lopi by Imperial Stock Ranch, but of course, we have yarn to suit lots of tastes…

Its a new year, and so far a very good one here at Only Ewe. We’ve been busy helping customers, busy planning classes, and of course, busy knitting! Over the weekend we had a fantastic open house in “The Room Next Door”…I’m sure it will get its own blog post this week. All of our teachers were there, showcasing new designs, new projects, and new classes. I’ve seen some of our new class samples in the works (thanks Susan!) and they are going to be wonderful! Keep checking our class calendar and website to see what we add, as you’re sure to find something you’ll love.
As a teaser, here is a cleverly unique cowl that Erin made from a pattern in Vogue Magazine…This one is knit in a crazy/wonderful green color in Silky Wool. Come by the store to check it out, try it on, or just ooh and ahh…
